Context

The communications workshop will be an interactive space. It will combine both strategic and practical aspects of the outreach of Southern Voice’s flagship initiative: The state of the SDGs. This gathering is the first one among communications experts from the network. It aims to be the seed for more collaborative work and to increase the visibility of research from the Global South on development debates.

Objectives

  • Strengthen the communications strategy and products of Southern Voice, and specifically of the State of the SDGs Initiative
  • Develop an active community of communications experts from member think tanks of Southern Voice.

Session 1 – Setting the scene

Introductions of participants and moderators
Presentation by Marcela Morales, Research Officer SV on the three cross-cutting themes:
- leave no one behind
- synergies and trade-offs
- global systemic issues
Presentation by all six participants on the research so far of each organization. 2 min each. Followed by discussion.

Session 2 – Getting the images right

Building on session 1 we will brainstorm together on how we could visualize the three cross-cutting themes. Divided in three teams, each of them will create a possible story board of a video on one of the themes. At the end we will know what images the teams need to produce in their countries in order to make the videos reality.

Session 3 – Better interviews and podcasts

The session will focus on how to produce strong podcast, which interview techniques to use and practicing how to carry them out. In this session we will also prepare the interviews for Friday.

Session 4 - Blog writing and editing

Writing for the web is one of the most important activities think tanks do nowadays. In this session, we will explore how to write and edit blogs that attract the reader and convey our key messages.

* For Day 1, Participants should bring:

  • Phone to take pictures with.
  • Phone that records audio or a handheld recorder (if available) and the lapel microphone that was provided to them at workshop in Sri Lanka.

* During Day 2, the communications officers will join the Research Conference in Room Beta (2nd Floor) and have a schedule to interview their teams to produce material for podcasts. See agenda Day 2 here.
