Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, Chair, Southern Voices on Post-MDGs and Distinguished Fellow, CPD addressed the international conference on “Women’s Economic Empowerment and Sustainable Development – the Synthesis for Success,” on 2 March 2015 in Riga, Latvia.

As a panellist, Dr Bhattacharya addressed issues related to strengthening the dimension of women’s economic empowerment in post-2015 framework. The panel discussion aimed to define the next steps, how to integrate the discussed solutions/practices and what kind of structural changes are in need within post-2015 framework and can be efficient in further implementation of Beijing Platform for Action as well.

Other panellists were Baroness Northover, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Cooperation, United Kingdom; Mr Martin Bille Hermann, State Secretary for Development of Denmark; Mr Andris Piebalgs, the former European Commissioner for Development, EYD2015 Goodwill Ambassador and  Dr Caren Grown, Senior Director for Gender, World Bank.

The conference brought together 260 participants from more than 40 countries, representing EU institutions, international organisations including the UN, the OECD, the International Labour Organisation, the World Bank, as well as the private sector and NGOs. The event was organised by the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the European Commission.
